Talented defence could not change Tsarnaev verdict

A jury has returned a death sentence decision against Boston Marathon Bomber Dzokhar Tsarnaev. The lengthy trial pitted a talented defense team against the weight of significant evidence and public sentiment. UB Law School's SUNY Distinguished Service Professor Charles Ewing states that the defense faced nearly insurmountable odds.

" I don't think this was a winnable case from the defense perspective. They did a great job in marshaling the mitigating evidence, and they tried to show, and, I think, did show to a certain extent, that this offense was more caused by the older brother. But, in the final analysis, it just wasn't enough."

Though the trial is done, the conclusion to the case is expected to linger for quite some time in light of appeals and a current US Justice Department moratorium on executions.
