Bicycle-friendly momentum continuing in Buffalo

Michael Mroziak/WBFO News

The City of Buffalo, which has already taken numerous steps to accommodate bicyclists, is moving forward with a master plan to make the city even more bike-friendly.Bicycle advocates say more than just health benefits, biking is also an important to a community's overall quality of life. The Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus, which hosted a Bike to Work Day breakfast Friday, recently opened a storage facility where bicycle commuters can leave their vehicle when arriving for work.

"Others cities are doing it, but what's starting to happen right here and right is that we're becoming the leader in how you put the infrastructure in place to make it a livable, walkable, bikeable community," said Matthew Enstice, president and CEO of the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus.

The City of Buffalo, for its part, is expanding its network of bike lanes and installing new bike racks citywide. Next Thursday, the city will host the final public meeting for its city bicycle master plan, a joint project involving the city and state agencies.

"We've taken a look at the entire city and [asked] how do we connect every single neighborhood, every single destination, all the schools and parkways together that allows people to have different choices in their transportation options," said Justin Booth, executive director of GoBike Buffalo.

That public hearing will be held Thursday, May 21 at 6 p.m. in the auditorium in the downtown branch of the Buffalo and Erie County Public Library.

Also, later this month, bicyclists will get do something they normally can't -- ride on the Skyway. The Skyride Buffalo event is slated for May 30.
