A college student from East Aurora is running a long distance for a cause, Saturday morning.Aubrey McLaughlin ran a fifty-mile race in Gnaw Bone, Indiana, to raise funds and awareness for the Rural Outreach Center in South Wales, New York. McLaughlin said the particular brand of work being done by the ROC and its Executive Director, Pastor Frank Cerny, caught his attention.
“It’s a hand up and not a hand out, which is a big deal to me because giving things doesn’t fix the problem. I think that him and his board of directors and all the other people that support the Rural Outreach Center really understand that, and they approach the problem a lot differently than the people that otherwise help out rural poverty,” said McLaughlin.
McLaughlin has never run this long a distance, known in the running community as an “ultra.” He says he aims to raise $10,000 for the ROC, and have fun doing it.
