City planners approve new Checkers in North Buffalo

A popular drive-thru hamburger joint will be setting up shop in North Buffalo later this year.  City planners have given their approval to a new Checkers restaurant along Elmwood Avenue in the Regal Cinemas Plaza.

Co-Owner Gail Gentry says, "It's really exciting because we see that area as an up and coming, growing area, exciting to be close to downtown Buffalo, a trendy area. We think we're going to do really great in that area, absolutely."

"Buffalo knows good food. Buffalo's very limited with the amount of fast food chains that is has," says Gentry. "There isn't a hometown favorite for burgers and we want Checkers to be a hometown favorite."

For those not familiar with Checkers, it's a drive-thru restaurant that features burgers, fries, wings, hotdogs, chili dogs and ice cream.

Checkers is known for its black and white checkered tile buildings.

The Elmwood Avenue location would be the third locally. There is currently one on Union Road in Cheektowaga and a second at the Buffalo Niagara Airport.

Owners hope to have the North Buffalo Checkers open by late Summer.
