Iconic science museum observatory slated to reopen

Chris Caya WBFO News

The Buffalo Museum of Science is looking to reopen its nearly 85-year-old observatory. The iconic structure, which can be seen from the Kensington Expressway, has been closed since 1999 due to structural and safety issues. As part of the newly launched "See It Through" campaign, Museum of Science President and CEO Mark Mortenson says the telescope will be upgraded and access to the rooftop observatory will be improved.

"We're going to have functionality - technology that will actually enable them to view what is going on in astronomy from down on the fourth floor. We will have special opportunities for them to come up and look through the telescope itself," said Mortenson.

Mortenson says the Margaret L. Wendt Foundation donated a $350,000 challenge grant towards the campaign's $1.2 million goal.

The observatory's reopening is slated for  June 2016.
