Informal proposals were due on Friday for the redevelopment of Buffalo’s Central Terminal. WBFO caught up with Buffalo’s Mayor to see what he thinks could happen at the site.

The central terminal is more than eight decades old. But it hasn’t seen regular active use for more than 30 of those years. Since 1979, a number of private organizations have owned the site, but none have been able to find a sustainable use for it. Mayor Byron Brown says the building’s aesthetic significance should play a role in its future.

“The central terminal, again, is architecturally very beautiful. I certainly want to see it preserved,” said Brown.

At the start of the year, the Central Terminal made it on the list of possible sites for a new Buffalo Bills stadium, but that idea failed because the site isn’t big enough. Just this Friday, Brown said, “I think there are a number of exciting uses that could be developed for the terminal.” An amusement venue, maybe even a fairground including hotels, shops and restaurants are on the list of possibilities from the mayor.

Brown says the most important thing is to preserve this masterpiece of Buffalo history. He says it’s what the people want, and he supports it.
