One man is dead and an Orleans County Sheriff’s Deputy is recovering from injuries after a shootout in the early hours this morning. A domestic dispute call took two deputies to the scene of a car accident on Route 31A, where James Ellis, 44, of Wyoming, crashed into a telephone pole in the Town of Clarendon. As deputies arrived, Ellis exited the vehicle and began firing a .45 callibur handgun.

Orleans County Sheriff's Deputy James DeFilipps was hit twice in the abdomen, but his vest absorbed most of the impact. DeFilipps returned fire, striking and killing Ellis. DeFilipps treated at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester and later released.

WBFO has learned that the State Police are investigating the case.
