Testimony continues in Basil murder trial

Chris Caya/WBFO news

The jury in Jeffrey Basil's murder trial heard testimony Wednesday from friends of William Sager who were at Molly's Pub on the night of his death. Basil is accused of "launching" Sager down a flight of stairs inside the now-closed Main Street bar in May.

Sager died more than two months after he was attacked inside Molly's Pub on Mother's Day.

A friend from the Air National Guard, Matthew Baird, testified that there was "never any indication of violence or anger" coming from Sager that night.

Baird was outside the bar when the incident occurred and said if Sager was having any issues with Basil or anyone he would have never left his side. Baird says when he saw Sager propped up outside the bar it was obvious he was unconscious and "something wasn't right" with him.

Another friend of Sager's, Donald Hall, said he was trying to help Sager, but Basil kept screaming at him to get off his property. Surveillance video shows Hall was on a public sidewalk next door. That's when he phoned 9-1-1. During a recording of the call played in court, Basil was clearly heard threatening Hall.
