Dealing with holiday stress

Feeling overwhelmed by the holidays? The holidays can be stressful in so many ways as we squeeze out extra time for parties, decorating and shopping, but there are things you can do to ease your nerves.

"I have three teenage daughters. They want everything and, as a single mom, it's very hard to provide it all for them," says Leanne, one of many shoppers at the Factory Outlet Mall in Niagara Falls this weekend.

Shelly was also making the rounds the Factory Outlet Mall in Niagara Falls this weekend. She notes, "not having enough money to buy everything I want to buy [is stressful]... I have three children and one grandchild."

Stress comes in many forms including lack of sleep, change of appetite, anxiety and depression, notes Erie County Health Commissioner Dr. Gale Burstein.  Regardless of what's causing your stress, she says talking it out can be helpful.

"Just having somebody you can confide in and talk about what's driving your stress," notes Dr. Burstein,  "Maybe getting a third party opinion of what you can do to help with your stress, reassurance to put things in perspective that it may not be so bad."

Burstein says to remember that too much of a good thing is not good, and to handle everything in moderation.
