The Buffalo Common Council has gone on record in support of a new downtown Bills stadium. Lawmakers approved a resolution calling on the mayor and the Department of Strategic Planning to explore various sites. But as WBFO's Eileen Buckley reports, that process is already underway.
"The city administrative branch of government has done a lot of research on potential sites," said Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown. "Suffice it to say that the city has looked at a number of sites."
The mayor tells WBFO News he is glad city lawmakers expressed interest in a downtown stadium. Brown noted the city is ready to help select a future site if asked.
"We are in a position to provide information to be helpful in this process," said Brown. "Once we get the point, where the owners, where the state and where the county says they are ready to move in that direction."
Potential downtown sites include an area near First Niagara Center and the Outer Harbor. But Mayor Brown noted the Pegulas, as new team owners, will play a major role in a site selection for a new Bills stadium.
The city has already started to examine infrastructure and traffic patterns.
The mayor is a member of the Governor's Stadium Commission, but Brown said he's not sure when they will reconvene.
