Wegmans closes three stores due to snowstorm

WBFO News photo by Megan Wagner

For the first time, Wegmans said it was forced to close three Buffalo-area stores south of the city due to the Lake Effect storm.

"We did hear the snow totals as of this morning and they were just socked," said Michele Mehaffy, Consumer Affairs manager at Wegmans.

Wegmans in West Seneca, the Losson Road store in Depew and a BlasdellWegmans on McKinley Parkway are all closed  Tuesday due to the winter snow storm.

"We closed the West Seneca store first, then about an hour later, we had to close the Losson store and McKinley as well," noted Mehaffy.

Wegmans wanted to make sure both employees and shoppers were not put in any danger.  Many workers could not get to the sites due to the heavy lake snows.

"To make sure our employees are safe and keep customers safe that's why we had to make the decision," said Mehaffy.

Deliveries to some of the  Wegmans were also stalled on the Thruway.  Mehaffay said the stores are expected to stay closed until 7 a.m. Wednesday.

"That's what we are saying right now. Obviously we will have to reassess the situation," stated Mehaffy.

Ironically Wegmans opened its first story in Cheekowaga on Dick Road in the Blizzard of 1977.
