The Buffalo Zoo is celebrating the birth of a baby giraffe. The unnamed male calf was born to first-time parents A.J., the 5-year-old mother, and Moke, the 3-year-old father, last Friday, October 24. Two other female giraffe reside at the North Buffalo zoo.
The zoo's giraffe house will be temporarily closed to allow the mother to bond with her baby and for the herd to adjust to her presence. Visitors will be able to view the animals through the house's windows.
The gestation period of giraffes is around 15 months, according to the zoo. Calves usually remain with their mothers until they are about 22 months old.
