Possible explosion at Amherst business injures one

Chris Caya/WBFO News

Two alarms were called to an industrial park in Amherst Friday morning for a possible fire or explosion. Ellicott Creek Fire Department Chief Dave Demeester says one man was injured inside the IIMAK plant at 185 John Glenn Drive and was taken to ECMC.

Due to HIPAA rules, Demeester would not discuss the man's injuries, but he says hazmat was called to the scene.

"Due to some of the chemicals that are in the plant, we just did it as a precaution to make sure that none of that was involved. None of it was involved. There were chemicals in the area, but they weren't affected by the explosion, so there was no hazmat issue at all," Demeester said.

John Glenn Drive was closed for about two hours. Demeester says the cause of the explosion is under investigation.

IIMAK describes itself as "a global leader in the manufacturing and development of printing, imaging, and marking consumable supplies."

A company official would not describe the extent of the damage or say when plant would reopen.
