A ceremony in Alden today will honor the memory of Sergeant Brett E. Gornewicz. The Alden native was killed in Afghanistan in 2012.

Sergeant Gornewicz enlisted in the Army Reserves in 2006. He was assigned to the 178th Engineer Battalion, 412th Theater Engineer Command.

On November 3, 2012, Sergeant Gornewicz and two other reservists from New York died of wounds they sustained   when their humvee was struck by an improvised explosive device.  He was 27-years-old.

Today, officials will gather with his family in a dedication event, renaming the Alden Post Office as the Brett E. Gornewicz Post Office.  A plaque dedicated to Sergeant Gornewicz will be placed at the Alden Post Office as a reminder of the price of freedom.
