D'Youville gets ready for new athletic complex

Mike Desmond/wbfo news

Construction workers are racing to get D'Youville College's new athletics field and locker room ready for the start of the fall sports seasons.

The project is past the dirt being moved around and heavy equipment swirling around the Fourth Street site.

The first games are slated for the new multi-sport field in four weeks. Practices start in two weeks.

The locker room building is a little behind schedule but it's coming along also.

"I think just yesterday they put in the D'Youville name into the field," said D'Youville Associate Operations Vice President Ed Cogan.

"They're doing the final cut-ins, meaning the turf installers and that A-Turf that's doing the work. But, they have installers that are doing the final cut-ins of all the demarcation lines."

The next big part of the project will be installation of the netting to keep balls from various sports from heading out onto the streets or the Thruway.

The finishing touches are still needed on some D'Youville's new facilities.

This nearly $5 million project is one of two major projects the college has under construction. The other is the new science complex along Niagara Street, which has shifted from demolition in the old Gateway-Longview buildings into construction. Faculty and students are scheduled to move in a year from now.
