While some believe Governor Cuomo's reelection is a certainty, a challenger in the September Democratic primary wants to make his path more difficult. Fordham Law School teacher Zephyr Teachout was in town Wednesday to meet with Buffalo teachers and stress her support of public education. She points out that the governor has been cutting spending on public education in order to provide tax cuts for the rich.
In this race, she claims to be the traditional Democrat who supports traditional Democratic issues like public schools, controlling the banks and, what kind of economy the state should have.
"I don't think he (Cuomo) is a Democrat. I don't think he represents the values of New York," Teachout said.
"I think he has campaigned to clean up Albany. Four years ago, he said that was why he wanted to become governor. He has not only failed to do that, but he has made it worse. We have a broken political system and Cuomo is part of that broken system. I want to fix it."
Teachout has long experience in political campaigns, working heavily with the new social media techniques which have become so basic to politics. She says her campaign has experienced staff members who will be able to raise the money needed to get her message out to party members who vote in the primary.
