Thunderstorms sweep through WNY, more rain and flooding likely

Heavy thunderstorms brought more precipitation to Western New York Wednesday night, adding more rising water to area streams and creeks.

Thursday's forecast calls for rain to resume in the afternoon. More thunderstorm activity is expected to develop, as well. A Flash Flood Watch has been issued for most of the region from this evening through Friday afternoon.

WBFO Senior Reporter Eileen Buckley captured images of threatening clouds while traveling through North Buffalo Wednesday evening.

Meteorologist Jim Mitchell says more periods of heavy rain could cause more flooding, especially in already hard hit areas like Gowanda and Silver Creek.

"The ground is already saturated.  Creeks and streams are still running fairly high," said Mitchell.  "The potential is there.  It wouldn't take much to push them over their banks, causing flooding there again."

A cold front will be moving through; by Friday, high temperatures will drop to the upper 40s and no higher than 50.

The heavy rainfall will finally taper off Friday night.  It will be partly sunny both Saturday and Sunday with a slight chance of further showers.  By Monday, a dry spell begins with most sunny skies and seasonable temperatures for the early part of the week.
