Rehab work continues at Delaware Park

Mike Desmond/wbfo news

The annual push is on to get Delaware Park's rose garden ready for the season. Additionally, major work will refurbish the pergola overlooking the garden.

"It's falling apart," said Thomas Herrera-Mishler, President and CEO of the Buffalo Olmsted Parks Conservancy. "This grant is specifically to refurbish the beautiful, historic pergola structure."

Albany has provided $250,000 for this work and work on the outside of the Marcy Casino. The city of Buffalo has been working on improvements inside the casino. The Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo is also providing support.

"It's going to allow us to build new, handicapped-accessible parking. We're going to remove the parking lot that's currently between the rose garden and the Marcy Casino completely so there will be a continuous landscape flowing from the rose garden right up to the building," Herrera-Mischler said.

Rehab work includes replacing some of the pergola's columns.

"And we're putting in a new handicapped-accessible pathway that doesn't look handicapped accessible."

He says the work is being carefully planned to adjust to schedules of the park's many users.

"We're going to have to work around wedding season because we don't want to mess up anybody's special day."
