If you text and drive, law enforcement will have an eye out for you in the coming days. State Police and local authorities are participating in "Operation Hang Up" through next Tuesday. They are using stepped patrols and checkpoints to catch drivers who illegally use mobile devices behind the wheel.
New drivers convicted of texting while driving will have their license suspended for 120 days on their first offense. During an appearance in Buffalo Thursday, Governor Andrew Cuomo said authorities are targeting young drivers, in particular.
"If they get caught texting while they're driving during the first probationary period, they're going to lose their license for a period of time. I'd rather they lose their license than they lose their lives," Cuomo said.
The maximum fine for a first offense is $150 and the points taken off the license for distracted driving have increased from three to five, which will cost motorists much more in insurance premiums.
