A fire at the New York Power Authority plant in Lewiston was extinguished Wednesday night.
There were no injuries or power service disruptions to the plant’s customers and no impact—environmental or otherwise—on the surrounding communities.
According to a statement from NYPA, the fire broke out at 7:10 pm in one of the 13 step-up transformers at the Robert Moses Niagara Power Plant, the hydroelectric project’s main generating facility.
The plant’s emergency management response plan was immediately activated. An automatic water deluge system worked as designed.
First-responders that helped extinguish the fire were the Upper Mountain Fire Co., Lewiston Fire Company No. 1, Niagara Active Hose Company, Sanborn Fire Co. and the Niagara Falls Air Base Emergency Response Unit.
The cause of the fire, which was contained to a single transformer, is under investigation and a damage assessment is under way.
The plant remains in service.
