The Grand Island Fire Company rescued a man after an ATV accident Saturday afternoon. Authorities report that 19-year-old Greg Van Norman was crossing a creek bed in a wooded area northwest of Whitehaven Road when his all-terrain vehicle overturned. The vehicle landed on the teen, pinning him beneath it. Van Norman was able to use his cell phone and work with Buffalo 911 operators to direct the fire rescue crew to his location.
Van Norman suffered serious injuries to his lower extremities and is being treated at ECMC.
Officials claim that the cell phone likely saved the man's life as he was traveling alone in wintry conditions.
