The name of fallen New York State Trooper Kevin Dobson, who lost his life when he was struck by a motorist while conducting a traffic stop on the I-290 in March 2011, will soon grace a portion of the busy highway. Signs will go up designating the I-290 bridge at the Colvin Boulevard exit the New York State Trooper Kevin P. Dobson, Sr. Memorial Bridge. The naming legislation passed both houses of the state legislature and was recently signed into law by Governor Andrew Cuomo.
State Senator Tim Kennedy of Buffalo, who introduced the bill, says the designation honors a dedicated officer of the law.
"Trooper Dobson was faithfully committed to his duty to protect and serve our community. he went above and beyond, always working hard to keep our roads and neighborhoods safe," Kennedy says.
"The designation will serve as a reminder for all Western New Yorkers that our highways were made safe by Trooper Dobson and his brothers and sisters in uniform."
Kevin Dobson, a father of three, served on the State Police for 13 years. A monument in his honor was dedicated earlier this year at the Clarence barracks.
Dobson died just months after New York's 'Move Over' law was passed. The law, which requires motorists to change lanes when possible to avoid vehicles and persons involved in traffic stops, is intended to avoid such accidents.
Dobson's father, Richard Dobson, is currently the Democratic candidate for Erie County Sheriff.
