Parents offer angry response to Pinnacle changes

Mike Desmond/wbfo news

For Pinnacle Charter School parents Thursday there was good news, bad news, and clouds of confusion.

Earlier in the day, the city Board of Education voted to annex Pinnacle's students and its building.

The immediate future for its teachers is not as clear.

School board officials say under the BTF contract, first preference goes to a small number of laid off teachers. Current Pinnacle teachers will be interviewed for jobs as city teachers.

Current Pinnacle Chief Academic Officer Linda Marszalek will not be retained and will be be replaced by a principal appointed by City Hall.

"If I let my child stay here, I want to know what we're getting into," Marszalek said.

Other parents focused their anger on a pair of officials from the State Education Department who attended the meeting.

"What's going on, as far as shutting this school down, is not right," said Dallas Lamont.

School Board President Barbara Seals Nevergold, seated, was among the handful of city school officials to appear at the parents' meeting.

Also on hand were five people from the city school system, including School Board President Barbara Seals Nevergold. The meeting did not include Schools Superintendent Pamela Brown.
