NFTA to spruce up Erie Canal Harbor station

NFTA

With all of the new construction taking place at Canalside,  the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority says it's going to remodel its Erie Canal Harbor rail station.

NFTA spokesman Douglas Hartmayer says the agency will spend $136,000 to spruce up the rail station. He says the new design will blend with all of the new attractions planned on the waterfront.

"We're going to commence a complete remodel and take apart some of the station, take that red arch down, remove some of the canopies, and end up at the end of the day with a piece of architecture that fits in to the changing landscape that is going on in and around Canalside," Hartmayer told WBFO.

The new structure near the former Donovan State Office Building will be "terra-cotta red" and will feature reproductions of paintings that depict the history of the Buffalo Harbor.

"With more people using Metro Rail to come down to concerts and family venues...that's why we're moving now so that our project will fit in, rather than stand out," Hartmayer said.

Work is scheduled to begin in a couple of weeks and should be complete by mid-November.
