Hazmat alert cleared in Amherst

Photo from Google map

An Hazmat alert was issued for some residents in Amherst Friday morning due to an environmental incident in the area.

Town of Amherst Police Department and the Erie County Emergency Management had asked residents living near Sagewood, Teakwood, Shetland, Maple and Fifth to close windows, turn off air conditioning and stay indoors until further notice.

About an hour later, the alert message was terminated and residents were told they could resume normal activities.

Reports indicate the incident involved sanitation workers who became violently ill on Teakwood Terrace. Three workers were reportedly taken to Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital. WBFO News is waiting for confirmation on the incident.
