The wrought-iron fence surrounding an Amherst cemetery has proven to be a deadly presence for area deer. The animals are impaling themselves on the spiked fence surrounding the White Chapel Memorial Cemetery. Area residents are urging that a solution be found. A similar problem in Williamsville was solved with the application of shields over the fence spikes.
Management at the cemetery argue that as a not-for-profit operation, they do not have the resources to alter the mile or more of fencing. Fundraising efforts are being sought to help with the issue.
