Sequester will impact local public housing

It appears that some local residents who can least afford it  are about to feel the weight of the federal government's spending cuts.
The Buffalo Municipal Housing Authority currently serves about 10,000 residents in 27 developments across the city of Buffalo and cuts being made by the Department of Housing and Urban Development are expected to total nearly $6 million .

BMHA Executive Director Dawn Sanders-Garrett says potentially 105 families could lose their rental assistance, known as Section 8.

"We have the  authority to do up to 1,200 families. I think right now we're at 1,100," Sanders-Garrett said.

"So , I'm hoping, (based on) the fact that we're are not at our authority budget capacity, we would not be faced with having to terminate a family."

However, Sanders-Garrett says no decisions will be made until the BMHA's 2013-2014 budget is drawn up. Most of the cuts won't take effect until the start of the new fiscal year July 1.

"We open up our waiting lists and there were over 1,500 families that came through the door over a three-day period. So it (Section 8) is very necessary and very much-needed in this community."

The future of BMHA's aging housing stock is also up in the air  with HUD cutting funding for capital improvements and affordable housing operations.
