A federal grand jury has returned three superseding indictments as a result of the ongoing investigation into criminal gangs on Buffalo's East Side. Members of the Bailey Boys are accused of three murders, six shootings, and a robbery. LRGP gang members are charged with racketeering for cocaine trafficking and conspiracy to murder rival gang members.
Special Agent in Charge of the Buffalo FBI Office Christopher Piehota says through combined use of resources, state charges are being moved into the federal arena where criminal penalties are enhanced for violent activities.
"We target entire gang structures. We don't look at individuals. We take entire gangs out of action," said Piehota.
Buffalo Police Commissioner Daniel Derenda says since 2010, investigators have cleared 19 homicides and he says 140 gang members have been taken off the streets.
"Many more are forthcoming. In the days, weeks, and months ahead, we'll be back here to announce more arrests," Derenda said. "Not only will our efforts continue, but they will intensify."
The racketeering charge carries a maximum sentence of life in prison, a $10 million fine or both. More arrests are expected.
