Buffalo fire displaces nine residents

Nine people are homeless following a morning fire that heavily damaged two homes in the City of Buffalo. Firefighters were called to a vehicle fire in a driveway on Box Avenue around 6:30 a.m. Thursday. Within minutes, the blaze spread to the adjacent houses.

Fire Commissioner Garnell Whitfield tells WBFO News firefighters rescued a 90-year-old woman. Eight other adults also made it out safely.

"Firefighters were able to get in, under the direction of her son. He pointed to where she was. They got in and were able to extract her from the building," Whitfield said.

"We're very thankful that there were no serious injuries today."

The fire was contained within an hour. Three firefighters suffered minor injuries. They were treated and released from ECMC.

At least one of the two damaged homes will have to be demolished.  The Red Cross is assisting the displaced residents.
