Buffalo woman sentenced for hit-and-run crash

A Buffalo woman is going to jail for a hit-and-run crash that critically injured a motorcyclist last June. Jennifer Garno, 36, pleaded guilty to leaving the scene of serious physical injury accident and driving while impaired by drugs and alcohol. Jeffrey Stanton, 51, of Tonawanda suffered a broken leg and head injuries that the prosecutor said "will last a lifetime."

Garno admitted to driving her pickup truck through a red light on West Utica Street and striking Stanton. She attempted to flee the scene on foot, but was captured by police officers with the assistance of witnesses.

A blood analysis revealed morphine, cocaine, marijuana and alcohol in Garno's system.

After Garno was sentenced to 1 1/3 to 4 years in prison, Stanton's sister Maureen Malott said the West Side resident got what she deserved.

"I think it was appropriate for her to get the maximum sentence. She's clearly got a problem and one hopes that that will be addressed, but it still doesn't mitigate what happened to my brother," Malott said.

Garno told the Court before sentencing she is truly sorry for what she did and deserves whatever sentence she receives.
