A winter storm packed a punch across the Western New York region dumping up to a foot of snow in some areas. But the National Weather Service canceled a Winter Storm Warning for all of Western New York.

Snowfall amounts vary throughout the region.  Nearly 11 inches were recorded at the Buffalo Niagara International Airport.   The National Weather Service Office at the Buffalo Airport says 13 inches fell in Hamburg and in Perrysburg in Cattaraugus County.  A foot measured by weather spotters in the city of Buffalo, 11.2  inches in Kenmore, 11 in Williamsville, more than 10 inches fell in Orchard Park and up to a foot of snow fell in Franklinville.

National Weather Service meteorologist  John Rozbicki says nearly a foot of snow fell on Western New York over the last 18 hours.

"We're pretty much out of the woods now.  The worst of the snow was from late yesterday afternoon through much of yesterday evening," said Rozbicki."  "As we got into the overnight hours the steadier snow has tapered off.

Another inch or two of snow is possible during the day Thursday.  Early Friday could bring some patchy drizzle mixed in, but would be brief according to the National Weather Service.

"Pretty well behaved event," noted Rozbicki.

The winter storm forced the cancelation of a number of flights in and out of the Buffalo Niagara International Airport Thursday.  It is best to check with individual airlines if traveling.

Clearing away snow

Snow removal efforts continue across the region.  In Buffalo Department of Public Work officials say most main and secondary roads are open at this time in the city.   Officials say the city received between 12-15 inches of snow.

Crews who operate the city's snow fighting fleet have been on 12-hour shifts since early Wednesday  in preparation of the storm. And Public Works Commissioner Steve Stepniak is asking drivers in the city to please obey parking restrictions.

City crews have begun removing snow on residential streets, but officials remind motorists to leave extra time for the morning commute and to travel with caution.

As city residents wait for side streets to be cleared, some motorists were getting stuck at street corners as they tried to travel in their vehicles.

Department of Public Works also reminds residents on the West Side that Thursday is garbage day.   Officials ask residents to have their vehicles on the proper side of the street starting at 9 a.m. Thursday so that plows and sanitation trucks can get down the streets. Vehicles parked illegally after 9 a.m. could be tagged or towed.

The winter storm has forced the cancelation of two Meals on Wheels programs for Thursday.  Meals On Wheels, Ken-Ton will be closed and Meals On Wheels, North Tonawanda will also be shut down Thursday.
