Buffalo News publisher Stan Lipsey stepping down

The longtime publisher of The Buffalo News is stepping down.  Stanford Lipsey, who has been with The News for 32 years, will leave his post on January 1.  The announcement was made by Warren Buffett, chairman of The News.

During his tenure, Lipsey oversaw the paper's competition with the Courier-Express, then its eventual evolution from the Buffalo Evening News to a morning paper following the Courier's closing in 1982. The paper also created a comprehensive web presence in recent years.

The 85-year-old Lipsey will become publisher emeritus of the paper.  He will be succeeded as publisher by News President Warren Colville, who has been with the paper for 25 years.
