Judge says Bethlehem Steel demolition can proceed

Mike Desmond/WBFO News

Despite the objections of preservationists, it appears a building that is part of the old Bethlehem Steel complex in Lackawanna will be demolished.

The City of Lackawanna is seeking to demolish the site's former administration building.  An attorney for the building's owner, Gateway Trade Center, was in Erie County Court Tuesday, arguing for more time to explore possible alternatives after a 90-day stay was issued earlier this year.

But Judge Kenneth Case Tuesday determined the company has not presented a valid alternative to the court and rejected an appeal for more time.

Preservationists say the three-story Beaux Arts-style building, which has been vacant since the mid-1980s, is historically and architecturally significant and can be salvaged.
