A local World War II veteran has finally received the recognition he has deserved.
In a Friday evening gathering with family, friends and Representative Brian Higgins, 84-year-old Jim Steinmetz of Collins, New York, was awarded a series of medals he earned during his service but never received.
Steinmetz enlisted in the Navy in 1945, patrolling the Atlantic Ocean for submarines.
