A state of emergency has been declared in the Wyoming County town and village of Castile following a massive overnight fire that destroyed a government building.
Two dozen fire companies were called to 55 North Main Street around 2 a.m. The 130-year-old building, which is a total loss, housed town and village offices, a restaurant, and apartments.
Some residents tell media outlets that the owner of the restaurant, Lorraine's Place, who lives above the restaurant, is unaccounted for. Authorities have not confirmed her status.
Municipal government is at a standstill because there are no working phones or computers in town and village offices. The fire may have destroyed some government records.
Water had to be brought to the scene because the local system is undergoing upgrades. An emergency operations center has been set up at the scene.
The cause of the fire is being investigated.
