New law targets identity theft

In an effort to try to protect Social Security numbers, Governor Andrew Cuomo signed two protection measures into law Tuesday.

One bill bars hiring inmates in prisons for positions giving them access to any personal identification information like Social Security numbers. There have been problems around the country with call centers run out of prisons, giving inmates access to credit card numbers and other personal ID.

The other bill limits the use of Social Security numbers in business transactions and bars companies or individuals from refusing to do business with someone who won't provide that number.

"It's critical that people know that as much as possible that we tried to protect their vital information," said co-sponsor Dennis Gabryszak. "This is a good measure that hopefully is going to help the consumer and protect the consumer."

Gabryszak is warning people to protect those numbers and don't give them out unless necessary.
