Firm chosen to develop Canalside children's museum

The creation of a children's museum at downtown's Canalside is one step closer to reality.

Explore & More on Wednesday announced the selection of Gyroscope, an Oakland, California museum development firm that will develop the master plan for the waterfront museum.

Explore and More board chair Peter Bergmann says the firm specializes in childhood learning in museum settings.

"Our goal is to create a museum that is uniquely Buffalo, celebrating the rich culture of our region and inspiring creativity, curiosity, and imagination for children and families. We will bring people to the waterfront year-round and be a place where memories are made," said Bergmann.

Empire State Development Regional president Sam Hoyt was among several leaders that appeared at Canalside for the announcement.

"This is what Governor Cuomo wants to see in Buffalo. Governor Cuomo wants to see progress...vitality...state investment that ends up with creation of jobs [and] catalyzes the private sector to invest, as well," Hoyt said.

In May, the Erie Canal Harbor Development Corporation selected Explore and More of East Aurora to operate a Canalside children's museum.  Explore and More now has one year to create a master plan and capital campaign that outlines the total cost and size of the museum.
