Memorial Day parades and ceremonies are taking place in dozens of Western New York communities today.
The 914th Airlift Wing will take part in Memorial Day ceremonies in Batavia.
A flyover of one of the Wing's C-130s is scheduled to coincide with the city's parade around 10am. Congresswoman Kathy Hochul will be among the dignitaries on hand.
State Senator Tim Kennedy will take part in a ceremony honoring Cheektowaga Army veteran Walter Casheba at the Town Park at 1pm.
Kennedy's office says it will present Casheba with state service medals that are 44 years overdue.
The Erie County American Legion will host a salute to veterans this morning at Forest Lawn Cemetery.
American flags will be placed on the graves of veterans on the cemetery's "Field of Valor" and a ceremony will be held at the American Legion Memorial Monument near the Main Street gates.
The Buffalo Zoo will dedicate a new monument that will mark a long-forgotten episode in the city's history. The new marker outside the zoo's Gate Eight will direct attention to the middle of Delaware Park Golf Course, the site of a mass grave where 300 War of 1812 veterans were buried.
The dedication is a result of a grassroots effort by neighborhood volunteers who on Memorial Day last year placed 300 American flags around the overlooked grave site.
