NFTA says Outer Harbor land transfer will take time

The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority says it will relinquish ownership of more than 400 acres of prime waterfront real estate on Buffalo's Outer Harbor.

New NFTA Board Chair Howard Zemsky renewed the vow in a meeting with reporters today. But Zemsky says the change is not necessarily going to happen quickly.

"People should understand that we have to have conversations with Erie Canal Harbor Development Corporation itself. The mayor has expressed in expressing his views on the Outer Harbor.  So, we have to have conversations,"  Zemsky said.

The stretch of land in question includes Gallagher Beach and the Small Boat Harbor. Zemsky says for now, it's business as usual.

"We have a great season ahead," he added. "Regardless of when and with whom this potential transaction occurs, there won't be any disruption at all."

Those conversations are expected to continue at least through early summer. The NFTA has been under pressure from Congressman Brian Higgins and others to expedite the land transfer to an agency focused on waterfront development, like the Harbor Development Corporation.
