POLL: Cuomo earns high marks for response to coronavirus

Office of the Governor

Gov. Andrew Cuomo is earning high marks for his response to the coronavirus pandemic.

The latest Siena College poll says 87% of New Yorkers approve of how Cuomo is handling the crisis. That compares to only 41% for how President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence are each handling it.

New York is, of course, overwhelmingly Democratic. If you break down the numbers by party, 95% of Democrats and even 70% of Republicans approve of Cuomo's handling, while 82% of Republicans praise Trump.

“Similarly, by a 79%-18% margin–including at least 74% from every region and party–voters say New York State government is doing everything it can to protect the health of New Yorkers,” according to Siena Pollster Steven Greenberg. “However, by 53%-43% margin, they say the federal government is not doing all it can to protect Americans’ health. Although 82% of Republicans say the feds are doing all they can, 52% of Independents and 71% of Democrats say they’re not.”

Siena College also found that nearly 80% of those polled fear getting the virus, while a third say they know someone who has tested positive and one-quarter of those polled say someone in their household has been laid off from work because of the virus.

More than half of New Yorkers say they need help from the federal government to pay their current bills, with 53% saying they will use it for immediate needs. New Yorkers also seem about split on whether life "will be back to normal anytime soon."
