140 illnesses reported from Mighty Taco beans

Mighty Taco

More than 140 people have been identified as reporting nausea and vomiting after eating at an Erie County Mighty Taco, according to the Erie County Health Department. Erie County Health Commissioner Dr. Gale Burstein says the investigation is ongoing, however, all complaints of illness were reported between September 30 and October 6 and there have been no new complaints since.

The Health Department suspects a bad batch of refried beans was the source of the illnesses - and those beans are being tested by the Health Department's lab in Albany. Suspect food products also were removed from all Mighty Taco locations.

Senior Public Health Sanitarian Jeffrey Jurewicz says onsite inspections found no additional food products or food handling practices are suspected - and overall, Mighty Taco's food safety inspection record across all county locations "has been exceptional."
