Parkinson's awareness event to take place in Buffalo

The third annual Moving Day event for Parkinson’s disease will take place Sunday in downtown Buffalo. The event aims to spread awareness of the disease and raise money to support Parkinson’s programs and research.

In the United States, 60,000 new cases are diagnosed with the neurodegenerative brain disorder that affects your nervous system and movement each year. The fundraiser will feature a walk and a “movement pavilion” where participants can take part in activities such as dance, yoga and Tai Chi. The activities promote the importance of movement and exercise, as well as help patients manage symptoms.

Executive Director of the National Parkinson Foundation’s Western New York Chapter Valerie Pillo says encourages everyone to get involved as it is becoming more prevalent within the community.

“There’s still a lot of research being done to understand the disease. It can be a devastating diagnosis for a family. We know that there are thousands of people within the community that we’re trying to reach. It’s a very difficult diagnosis to make. What we’ve seen is a large number of young on sets, meaning you’re starting to see symptoms in your twenties. People think it’s an old person’s disease. Absolutely not,” said Pillo.

Pillo says also encourages people who have been diagnosed to reach out to the organization and take part in the support programs offered.

“We’re here to help you. You don’t have to go through this disease alone,” said Pillo.

Moving Day will begin at 8:30 a.m. at Coca Cola Field. Registration for the event is free. For more information visit www.MovingDayBuffalo.orgor call (716) 449-3795.
