Saturday marks "World No Tobacco Day" and to help celebrate, Rural/Metro has declared all of its properties tobacco-free. The company's Regional Director, Jay Smith, says employees are encouraged to take advantage of the policy and, if they use tobacco products, quit.
"We know that the best policy will contribute to a healthy environment for everyone. The best place to start is right at our home and we can lead by example. We feel we have an obligation as a healthcare leader to set high standards for a safe, healthy environment," Smith said Friday.
The new policy covers the grounds, sidewalks, parking lots, and private vehicles parked on Rural/Metro property. It applies to all tobacco products, as well as electronic cigarettes.
Smith admits there has been mixed feedback from Rural Metro's 600 local employees. The policy takes effect immediately and applies to all employees, patients, visitors, trainees, volunteers and vendors.
Smoking cessation support is being provided to any employee who wishes to quit.
