The Environmental Protection Agency says it has finalized its $4 million plan to clean up and remediate nine residential properties on Water Street in Lockport near Eighteen Mile Creek. The land, which is part of a Superfund site, is contaminated. EPA will purchase six of the nine properties, which are laced with PCBs and other contaminants including lead and chromium, and permanently relocate residents from five of them.
Five homes will be demolished and contaminated soil will be excavated from all of the properties. Three of the plots are vacant and owned by the city.
An old industrial building at the former Flintkote Company plant on Mill Street, which is part of the site, will also be demolished.
Eighteen Mile Creek has a long history of industrial use dating back to the 1800s.
