A new group of Say Yes Buffalo scholars are gathering at WNED | WBFO Studios for a two-day college kick-off event. WBFO Senior Reporter Eileen Buckley says it is a chance for about 180 city students to learn more about college life.
Say Yes scholars gathered for workshops learning about everything from managing financial aid to following a college syllabus. The students just graduated from Buffalo Public and city charter high schools.
Rachel Wilson was the first female African American valedictorian to graduate from Health Sciences Charter School on Ellicott Street in Buffalo. She's headed for Daemen College this fall to major in biology with hopes of becoming a pediatrician.
WBFO asked Wilson what her advice is to other students who are struggling.
“Just keep talking to your guidance counselors, make relationships with anyone come across, remember their names and get business cards. That will help open up your social networking,” responded Wilson.
Wilson says she comes from a single parent home and the Say Yes program is providing her with a chance to attend college.
“It’s mostly my mom and she works constantly and she tries to provide for both of us and so, by having Say Yes, it will help both of us keep us on track and make sure she is worried free,” Wilson explained.
As the students head to college this fall, Say Yes's purpose is to make sure they have enough information to make a smooth transition. Workshops include Diversity and inclusion, study skills, personal budgeting and how to handle a tough situation.
Wilson is working to learn as much as possible.
“I hope I get a lot of tips on how to do course work and keep on track and keep my independence,” Wilson said.
Say Yes students who attend both days of the two-day event will receive a BAK tablet from BAK USA.
