As we recently highlighted the story of an 18-year-old Buffalo teen who unsuccessfully ran for city school board, there was another teenager who clinched a seat in the Iroquois Central School District. WBFO's Focus on Education Reporter Eileen Buckley has his story.

18-year-old Gunnar Haberl appeared not only defeated his opponents, but he secured 799-votes, well above the more than 200-votes each of the other two candidates received.  Haberl tells us when they tallied up election numbers earlier this week he became very emotional.

Haberl graduated from Iroquois last year and just completed his first year at the University at Buffalo as a duel major in legal studies and political science. We first met Haberl back in April as he stood in line to see former President Bill Clinton in Cheektowaga.

Haberl said he decided to run for school board because when he was an Iroquois student he was an advocate for other students. He served on student government and was elected to the New York State Council on Leadership and Student Activities. Haberl tells us he believes it's time for more youth to be part of school district decision making because it's all about a 'students education’ and their 'future'.
