Buff State students and staff had a chance to talk about campus safety Sunday night during a public forum in Rockwell Hall.
There have been five serious crimes reported in the first month of the school year. Many speakers Sunday night said Buffalo State needs to do more to improve the sense of safety, from better lighting to more surveillance cameras, on top of the hundreds already there.
"When you look at it for the three-year period across the board, we're pretty consistent in the crimes that we have reported to us on campus," explained Buffalo State Police Chief Peter Carey.
"But I'm hoping that while we've had a few (crimes) in a short period of time this semester, we'll continue to have that stability and working toward reduction of crime on campus."
Carey says he has 33 sworn officers in his department and around 60 public safety aides who perform functions like monitoring desks at dorm doors to check ID on visitors to see if they are supposed to be there.
Campus officials say students have a duty to themselves to protect the school and if they see something, report it.
