Mayoral school control bill dies in Albany

The push for mayoral control of the Buffalo Public Schools is over, at least for the time being. As part of the end of session negotiations underway in Albany, the proposed bill died Tuesday. Just hours earlier, Mayor Byron Brown said given the level of dysfunction in the district, he thinks it's something that should happen.

"Our schools are failing thousands of children that attend the Buffalo public schools. There are over 34,000 children that are enrolled in the school district and I think something needs to be done," Brown told WBFO.

"Things need to be changed and I think one measure of that change would be a change in the governance structure."

Brown says lack of support among members of the local delegation was not helpful. He says voter turnout as low as four percent in recent years shows that residents are not engaged in the school district's governing process.
