There is much interest in Buffalo having a charter boarding school and the idea drew a crowd Tuesday night to review the proposal at the Merriweather Library.
The proposal from founder Tanika Shedrick is different from the SEED charter proposed by School Board Member Carl Paladino. SEED kids go home on weekends while Shedrick doesn't want that.
Canisius College architecture student Marcus Darby was at the meeting in Merriweather Library. Darby was Shedrick's student at Oracle Charter.
"A lot of inner city kids who she's trying to reach, they're in these communities where there's a lot of violence, a lot of distractions, everything like that. So, you staying at the school, you're in a place where you can have easy access to not only your instructors but people who have the same mind set as you and be able to go into the library and do the things you have to do, without having a long commute," Darby said.
Since charter payments from city schools wouldn't cover the costs, Shedrick wants approval from the Board of Regents so she can raise money for building renovation and an opening in the fall of 2017.
The school would open with 120 first year students and add another 120 each year for four years.
