Teachers union raises concerns at Riverside

The Buffalo Teachers Federation says there were 10 fights in Riverside High School on Tuesday. Union President Phil Rumore said it has to stop, but City Hall isn't responding.

Rumore has scheduled a news conference set for 3 p.m. Thursday in front of the school to blast its administration and downtown for doing nothing. He tells WBFO News there aren't enough security officers and the school administration doesn't leave the office.

During the February 25 school board meeting, Riverside teacher Marc Bruno described a classroom fight down the hall from his classroom which left blood on the floor for teachers to clean up.

"When I got to the room, it was pure pandemonium, desks thrown all over. Two students were beating each other on the teacher's desk," Bruno recalled.

"I finally got into the room and tried to get between the two students. There was blood everywhere. It was a horrific scene. And, due to the miscommunication, no member of security was able to arrive. I believe that they were not told that there was a fight," said Bruno.

Bruno said there are so many fights security officers can't get to all of them. After his comments, there was no discussion from any school board members and nothing was said by central administrators about his portrait of Riverside.
